SOUTH WEST QUEENSLAND PSYCHOLOGY SERVICE

                                           

The South West Queensland Psychology Service provides psychological services in the form of counselling, assessments and testing in the area of mental health. Psychologists employed by the service can provide counselling, administer IQ assessments, conduct stress defusing/debriefing sessions, conduct group workshops/seminars to promote positive mental health and workplace environments etc. The services are available throughout south west Queensland at the locations listed below.

COUNSELLING

Counselling is a confidential relationship between the counsellor and the client - whether an individual, a couple or a family - experiencing problems in their lives. Counselling can help people to resolve issues and to find their own solutions.
Psychologists work with clients to clarify problems, set goals, choose interventions and evaluate progress while developing lifeskills or competencies to enable people to help themselves. When a family is involved, the process includes the whole family. Young children who may have difficulty with words, often use drawings or other activities to express their feelings and emotions.

Some of the issues about which you might consult a counsellor -

Relationships - if your relationship is not living up to your expectations
Family - for any or all members of a family with issues to resolve
Grief - assistance to cope with loss and readjustment
Personal - for times of personal crisis or dealing with such issues as anxiety, depression etc.
Family Violence - for women, men, children and extended family members involved in any aspect of family violence
Children - if there are family, school or individual problems
Divorce or separation - to deal with the pain and anger of separation and to make mutually agreeable decisions about children and property

Centacare provides counselling to all members of the community at a number of locations
throughout south west Queensland.

MEDIATION

                                                                   

Mediation offers a mutual problem solving opportunity to separating couples. It is a process by which separating or divorcing couples are assisted by an independent mediator make their own agreements concerning the future of their children, finances and property.  Some of the issues for mediation might include -

  • Childrens' residency and contact arrangements
  • Parental responsibilities
  • Relationship decision making
  • Separation/divorce agreements
  • Review of divorce agreements
  • Living arrangements
  • Spousal and child maintenance
  • Financial arrangements

When is mediation appropriate?

There are NO time limits on when mediation can be useful.  It can be helpful before or after separation and before or after the commencement of legal proceedings.
