What we Do
Every week TRAMS is a buzz of movement, colour, sound
and business!! Volunteers are linked
with newly arrived refugee families in the community. Free English classes are provided.
Volunteers care for babies and young children whilst parents are learning
English. Computer lessons are offered.
Homework tutoring takes place as well as cooking and sewing classes,
community meetings, education and advocacy.
Members of the refugee and migrant community can drop
into TRAMS for information, referral
and assistance or make use of our computer bank to connect with friends and
family overseas or search for a job. TRAMS also offers its Centre as a venue for
migrant and refugee communities to hold meetings and
events.
The
Centre also provides opportunities for volunteer social events and gatherings
involving clients and volunteers celebrating together.
We are
committed to upholding the dignity of
all people and we strive to treat every guest at TRAMS with respect and a with a
willingness to understand. We are
not a charity and are not here to offer “a handout” but rather to empower
refugees and migrants, through friendship and communication, with the skills
needed to be fully integrated into their new home. As such, TRAMS is a place of welcome
where the gifts of refugees, migrants and volunteers together enrich the
Toowoomba community through centre based activities and
support.
The basic
principles upon which all our work at
TRAMS is founded include:
*Empowerment
*Respect for all people, treating them with
dignity
*Embracing diversity
*Local people responding to local unmet
needs
*Preferential option for the poor
*Humour
*Inclusivity- we will not exclude people on the basis of race, religion, gender, age or visa class
